Coaches vs Cancer

As a member of the Board of Directors for the Greater Kansas City Basketball Coaches Association, Coach Stirtz had the opportunity to attend a Coaches vs Cancer event at the College Basketball Experience on Tuesday evening. The event, which was sponsored by Capital Federal Bank and the National Basketball Coaches Association, was a fundraiser for the Coaches vs Cancer organization.

In attendance, volunteering their time and making donations to the cause of fighting cancer, were Bill Self, University of Kansas; Frank Martin, Kansas State University; Matt Brown, University of Missouri-Kansas City; and Mike Anderson, University of Missouri. The emcee for the night was former Missouri coach, Norm Stewart, the founder of Coaches vs Cancer. Coach Stewart, who won his battle with colon cancer in 1989, created the organization in 1993 as a way of drawing more attention to fight the disease.

October is breast cancer awareness month, so as we watch NFL players play with pink cleats or baseball players swing pink bats, let us be encouraged to give of our time and resources to find a cure for cancer. During the basketball season, participating coaches will wear tennis shoes during games for the same purpose. Together, cancer can be defeated…make an effort to do your part.
